Yellowstone - a devilsh landscape

Much of what makes Yellowstone NP distinct is the enormous quantity and variety of erupting areas - past and present. Mud pots, fumeroles, steam vents, geysers and just enormous areas of dead-looking earth testify to the heat and chemistry that is created by the hot magma a few thousand feet under our feet. Its a dynamic place - every tremor or quake changes what, and where, the venting will be for now.

Of course, the smell of sulfur is often present and between the looks and smell have given most of these sites names that evoke the hell-fire and brimstone you used to hear preached.
