We have all heard and read about the Mormon's trek to the desolate, unwanted area called Utah. As we left the Grand Tetons we drove through miles of dry sagebrush and scant towns and entered SLC through rugged, red-rock mountains and canyons. They have a beauty, too, but you can only marvel at the determination and faith it took to make this trip on foot over 150 years ago. This statue on the grounds of the Temple Square commemorates that journey. We learned a lot more in our day on the grounds of this amazing complex that would help us understand the fine people we would meet on our Sojourn in Rupert, Idaho.
Brigham Young led the people west and was the "Prophet" that exercised all authority. What they built in this inhospitable land is amazing and well worth a visit.
The original temple took decades to build - all while they were wresting a life and living out of this desert. It still is in use but is actually dwarfed by all the other church buildings surrounding it in downtown SLC. This sanctuary is still used for church services but sees a lot of tourist groups daily, led by young 'missionary' women (from around the world) who - we can attest- are highly trained and devoted.
